Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park was initially established as a rhino reserve and bird sanctuary, home to approximately 450 bird species which attract ornithological enthusiasts seeking to witness the spectacle of 1.5 million flamingos and various other bird species.

This park, while smaller in size compared to others in Kenya, presents a stunning view of the lake from its rock escarpment and is predominantly covered by wooded grasslands, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife sightings near the lake shore.

The lake's high algae content historically attracted a large population of flamingos, alongside other thriving bird species, warthogs, baboons and various large mammals. It now serves as an essential sanctuary for both the eastern black rhinos and southern white rhinos, contributing to the conservation of these endangered species.

Established in 1961 and declared a bird sanctuary in 1960, Lake Nakuru National Park spans an area of 188km2 and is dedicated to the protection of its diverse ecological habitats and characteristic flora and fauna species.

Lake Nakuru is globally renowned for its vast gatherings of pink and white flamingos, as well as one of the last remaining habitats for both black and white rhinos, making it a paradise for bird and rhino enthusiasts alike. Additionally, the park is home to giraffes, warthogs, baboons, hippos, and other wildlife, ensuring a rich and diverse safari experience for visitors.
